The Yangwang U9 from BYD has made waves, officially earning its place as one of the fastest electric cars in the world.

During recent testing in November, this electric supercar hit an astonishing top speed of 243.54 mph, smashing its previous records.

This milestone firmly positions the U9 as the third-fastest electric vehicle on the planet.

Who’s Faster?

Only two EVs have clocked higher speeds so far. The Rimac Nevera leads with a top speed of 258 mph, while the Aspark Owl SP600 prototype remains the undisputed champion at 273 mph.

When BYD first unveiled the Yangwang U9, it promised a top speed of 192 mph. At the time, this was already a head-turner. But the car’s cutting-edge quad-motor powertrain, generating a jaw-dropping 1,300 horsepower, has far exceeded those initial expectations. Over the summer, it managed 233 mph. Now, it’s pushed even further, crossing the 243 mph mark.

Beating the Competition

The Yangwang U9 isn’t just fast—it’s competitive. It has comfortably outpaced supercars like the Pininfarina Battista, once recognized as the fastest-accelerating car on the market.

When Yangwang stepped into the supercar arena, it was clear the company had bold ambitions. Challenging legacy brands like Ferrari, Lamborghini, and McLaren was no small task. Yet, it didn’t just compete; it made its mark by setting new records.

How It Fares on the Track

The U9 recently tackled the famous Nürburgring’s 12.9-mile Nordschleife loop, completing it in an impressive 7:17.9 minutes. While this is a significant accomplishment, some rivals still post faster times on the track. With ongoing developments, there’s no doubt the U9 will continue to push its limits.

A New Era for EV Performance

The Yangwang U9 isn’t the only EV raising eyebrows. Tesla’s Model S Plaid once left the Lamborghini Revuelto trailing in a thrilling drag race. These breakthroughs show just how far electric vehicles have come. As innovations in EV technology keep redefining what’s possible, it’s clear the world of supercars is changing fast—and the Yangwang U9 is leading the charge.
