Last year, Volvo announced its flagship electric SUV, and everyone was excited. Although it was on the road away behind its actual scheduled release date, some important standout technologies and features will still be in a “learning” phase.

We explored the Volvo EX90 on the scenic Newport Coast in California. The version we tested was the Twin Motor Performance model, wrapped in Sand Dune paint. It’s clear that Volvo’s aiming for something new and tech-driven with this model, but some features still feel like they’re in beta mode.

Back then, it was just a review of the Volvo EX90, in which we talked about its exterior and gave a little glimpse of the interior. But this time, we had a great ride in which we explored every aspect of it, and that’s why we are here to let you know whether it’s worth trying or not.

Power and Range

According to EPA estimates, the EX90, fitted with a 111 kWh battery, can go up to 310 miles on a full charge. The performance version delivers 510 horsepower and 671 lb-ft of torque, while the base model offers a solid 402 horsepower and 568 lb-ft of torque.

When it comes to charging, Volvo says you can recharge from 10% to 80% on a 250 kW DC fast charger in about half an hour. A bidirectional charging feature is on its way but won’t be active until Volvo rolls out a future software update.

Volvo has infused the EX90 with a minimalist Scandinavian style that keeps things simple and calm. Inside, you get a 9-inch driver’s display that you can set to show key details like speed, navigation, and range. There’s also a crisp, customizable heads-up display for extra convenience.

The main controls run on Google’s Android Automotive system, so you can use voice commands for navigation, climate, and media. Physical buttons are almost nonexistent; most settings are managed through a 14.5-inch vertical touchscreen in the dashboard. For some, adjusting wipers or mirrors through a screen may be a hassle, but the idea is that once set, these controls won’t need constant adjustments.

Subtle Yet Sleek Design

Connectivity and Digital Key

One cool feature is the digital key system, which turns your smartphone into a key. However, in practice, it was glitchy during our drive—we had to keep opening the virtual key card to unlock the car. While Volvo says they’re working closely with Apple to improve this and bring in CarPlay support, these features aren’t fully smooth just yet.

Driving Assistance and Lidar Tech

The EX90 introduces Volvo’s updated adaptive cruise control, called Pilot Assist, which activates by pulling a lever near the steering wheel. This system also has a lane-change assist feature, though it’s slower than similar systems in other cars.

On the tech side, the EX90 is fitted with a lidar sensor, a technology designed for future autonomous driving. Right now, it’s gathering data but won’t actually function until Volvo gives it the green light after further testing and regulatory approval. When activated, it’s set to support hands-free highway driving under limited conditions.

An Effort Toward Future Safety

The EX90 includes sensors that monitor everything from your attention level to whether you’ve left a pet or child inside. During our test, the system beeped when it sensed we were distracted, a handy reminder if you tend to lose focus. This extra layer of monitoring could help drivers stay safer on the road, especially in high-traffic areas.

Tech Hiccups and Future Updates

Some big names are contributing to the EX90’s tech, like Nvidia, Google, Qualcomm, and Luminar. With these components working together, it makes sense that Volvo is taking the time to get everything in sync.

The car’s lidar system, made by Luminar, is set for major safety functions, but these won’t be live until later. Volvo promises these features will roll out gradually, similar to GM’s Super Cruise.

The EX90 is still in its early stages, with some key updates expected to arrive in the coming years. Although not fully refined yet, Volvo’s EX90 hints at a solid future, especially with promised updates and tweaks to smooth out the experience.
